Indagación

He estado trabajando muchas ideas y poniendo al descubierto mi ignorancia, por ejemplo: Nayarit está al límite norte de Mesoamérica y una de las características es la utilización del maíz y su nixtamalización. Es decir, tenemos una comida prehispánica que llamaría pura, con pocos vestigios de mestizaje.

También fui al Museo de los Cuatro Pueblos en busca de información sobre la cosmovisión cora y huichol. ¡Qué sincretismo! El ojo de Dios huichol representa los puntos cardinales, el cosmos, sus lugares sagrados, por ejemplo, ¡el lugar donde paró el arca de Noé! El maíz figura entre sus deidades, es la madre de todos.

No encontré mucho material, así que recurro al historiador Pedro López, que le he pedido su ayuda en la investigación de las raíces de la cocina nayarita. Le conté lo que estoy haciendo, le ha gustado el proyecto y él hará un capítulo sobre las raíces e influencias de nuestra cocina. ¿Conocen la torta de cielo? Mi mamá siempre me contaba que los alemanes se habían llevado el oro de Tepic, pero que habían dejado la torta de cielo; el arroz con camarones típico de la zona de Mexcaltitán, el historiador Pedro asegura que es legado de los chinos asentados ahí a finales del 1800. Volviendo de esta digresión, el historiador me ha prestado el libro Los Indios de México, de Fernando Benítez, sólo el volumen que habla de los coras.

Se acerca la semana santa cora, nunca he estado en esta celebración, quiero ir, conocerlos, vivenciar la vida como ellos lo hacen y claro, saber qué comen y cómo lo elaboran.

I have been working on many ideas and exposing my ignorance, for example: Nayarit is in the northern limit of Mesoamerica and one of the characteristics of this culture is the use of corn and its nixtamalization. It means, we have pre-Hispanic  food that I would call pure, with few trails of miscegenation.

I have also been in the Four People Museum, looking for information about the Cora and Huichol world view. What a syncretism! The eye of God (the name of a craft Huichol people make) represent the cardinal points, the cosmos, their sacred places like the place where Noah´s arch stopped!  Corn is part of their deities, is the mother of men.

I couldn´t find much material, so I look for the historian Pedro López, that I have ask him to help me with the research on roots of the food from Nayarit. I talked to him about what I´m doing, he liked the project and will write a chapter on the roots and influences of our food. Like our dessert call torta de cielo, heavens tart, my mom always told me the story that the Germans owner of the banks back in 1880 through 1920 had stolen our gold, but left the recipe for that wonderful dessert; our rice with shrimp, typical from the Mexcaltitan region, historian Pedro assures that is an influence from the Chinese settled there back in those days. But coming back from this digression, historian Pedro lent me the volume that studies the Cora people of the work from Fernando Benítez called Los indios de Mexico (Indigenous people of Mexico).

The Cora Holy Week celebration is coming, I have never been there. I want to go, meet them, live their culture and of course know what they eat and how they prepare it.
